Guide to obtain Indian VISA

General information concerning obtaining visas for Symposium participants is provided below. The information provided is to be used for informational purposes only - it is highly recommended that ALL participants requiring a visa consult with an authorized visa processing service or appropriate official of the Government of India for specific guidelines and visa application procedures.

All foreign nationals intending to participate in the Symposium require a valid passport to enter India.  All are required to obtain an Indian VISA, except those of Nepal, Bhutan, and Maldives.

A Tourist Visa-on-Arrival shall be granted to a foreigner who is a national of Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Loas, Myanmar, and Indonesia.

Others can apply for a VISA in person or by post at the High Commission/Embassy based in the country from where the participant intends to depart for India, or through an authorized visa processing service.

Visa applicaiton forms are available through an authorized visa processing service or at the office of the Indian Embassy in the capital or other major cities of the country of residence. All NRIs/PIOs, including children (who don't possess OCI or PIO card) need to apply for VISA in seperate VISA forms.  All participants are advised to apply for either Tourist VISA or Conference VISA only.  The required documents are as mentioned below:

Tourist Visa:
1. Passport valid for a minimum of 190 days with at least two blank pages.
2. Two 2x2 passport photos.
3. Completed application (all columns in form are mandatory and must be completed)
4. Correct visa fee.

Conference Visa:
1. Original passport valid for at least 6 months with at least two blank visa pages
2. Completed application
3. Two 2x2 passport photos
4. Photocopy of proof of residence coinciding with address on application (Drivers License, State Issued ID); copy of birth certificate may be needed
5. Letter of invitation from the conference organizer in India. (can be requested during the registration process)
6. Business letter from employer or organization nominating applicant to attend
    For Washington University in St. Louis faculty/administration/student participants:
    This letter should include the following:
    • Full name, nationality, and job title
    • Your company's US address
    • Specify the exact purpos of the trip
    • Specify the number of entries and the length of each stay
    • Include your specific entry and exit dates
    • Include the validity of your requested visa
    • Be signed by an appropriate administrator   
7. Supporting documents from the Government of India; clearance from the Nodal Ministry, The Ministry of Home Affiars, The Ministry of External Affairs, and the State Government (documents provided below as .pdfs) may also be required.
8. Correct visa fee

Attendees holding passports issued by countries of Afghanistan, P.R. China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sudan, foreigners of Pakistani origin or stateless persons are required to follow special registration and visa processing procedures; more information is provided below.

Attendees holding passports issued by the U.S. or are temporary residents of the U.S. holding passports issued by other countries are recommended to consult with Travisa Visa Service, Inc. for India Visa Instructions and application requirements ; Travisa is a full-service visa processing operation who can expidte processing on behalf of customers, or provide guidelines on how to obtain a visa on your own.

Letters of Invitation & Government of India Clearance Documentation

A letter of invitation to the Symposium may be requested during the registration process and will be sent to you within 5 business days via email. Should an original be required, please allow at least 2 weeks for delivery.

Official Symposium clearance documents issued from respective departments and ministries of the Government of India may be required along with other application materials. If required, please download/print the Government Clearance documents below. The following clearances are provided: Nodal Ministry (MHRD), State Government, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and Ministry of External Affairs (MoEA).
